Not so many years ago, Parkers Landing was a booming city of 30,000 inhabitants.
It still retains its charter, though the oil wells have stopped gushing and the population
has dwindled to about eight hundred ninety-five.
This little town, nestled among the foothills of the Allegheny mountains, is located along
the Allegheny River about sixty miles north of Pittsburgh. The river flows through the
eastern part of the town. Today, standing among the hills covered with hemlock
and looking across the Allegheny to the hills of the farther shore, the observer finds it
hard to believe that here once were typical "hot towns" of an oil rush - towns with
names such as: Cash-Up, Slam Bang, Turkey City, Dog Town, and Pit Hole.
One finds it almost impossible to believe that from this little, almost-forgotten spot,
has sprung such a universally-appealing discovery...
